Day 7 Part 2: Stepping into the ‘Yellow City’s’ History! ๐Ÿ˜๏ธ๐Ÿ’›

After a day of basking in the sun on the tranquil beach, we embarked on a journey to Izamal, often referred to as the
‘Yellow City’ ๐ŸŒž๐Ÿฐ.

This holy town holds a significant place in history, as it was graced by the visit of Pope John Paul II in August 1993, a momentous occasion that aimed to connect with the indigenous Maya people of southern Mexico, recognizing and defending their rights, identity, and pride โœ๏ธ๐Ÿค.

The pope’s message resonated from a colonial monastery built atop the ruins of a Mayan pyramid, a powerful symbol of unity and cultural significance. In preparation for the pope’s visit, Izamal was entirely repainted in a single shade of yellow, a vivid tribute that continues to grace the town’s iconic houses to this day ๐ŸŒ†๐Ÿ’›.

As we explored the town, we encountered a statue of the pope in the courtyard and a small museum in the convent, both commemorating this historic visit ๐Ÿ—ฟ๐Ÿ›๏ธ.
